Aboriginal Education

Orange Public School has a strong commitment to educational programs that aim to ensure our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students excel and achieve in every aspect of their education and training.

All Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students have a personalised Student Learning Assistance Plan (SLAP) and we review and update our targets for our students every 10 weeks to ensure they are achieving their educational and social outcomes.

We were a pilot school for the Aboriginal 8 Ways of Learning program and have embedded the 8 Ways framework into all our OPS Maths units. We also use the framework regularly to guide our teaching in all other KLA's.

Orange Public School has an active Aboriginal Education Committee, consisting of nine teachers across all grades, as well as various parents and community members. We hold 'Yarn Up's' once a term where the community and the committee members come together to discuss the issues facing the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and how OPS can help Close the Gap.

One of our teachers in an executive member of the Orange Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG) and attends regular meeting and professional development courses to ensure OPS is up to date with the latest information regarding the wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

We are committed to increasing the knowledge and understanding of the histories, cultures and experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the First Peoples of Australia and do so through explicit lessons during Sorry Day, Reconciliation Week and NAIDOC celebrations. We also have Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives embedded in all of our units of work across all KLA's and aim to involve community members in the planning and programming process as often as possible.
